Expat Money Newsletter - March 2020

Welcome to Expat Network’s Money Newsletter.

This month’s newsletter features retirement abroad. Retirement abroad to enjoy a better climate and a different lifestyle has long been popular. We carried out a survey to find out the main motivations and concerns of those considering retirement abroad as well as the experiences of those who have already retired abroad. Here we set out the results.

For Brits considering retiring abroad to Europe the Brexit transition period offers a final opportunity to retire and lock in the current residency rights. We set out what will happen during the transition period in 2020 and what we know about the arrangements after the end of the year.

We are holding a Retire Abroad Roadshow at Epsom Racecourse on 4th July to help anyone planning to retire abroad and set out the issues that need to be considered.

Retire Abroad Roadshow

Expat Network is holding a Retire Abroad Roadshow on 4th July at Epsom Racecourse.

If you are considering retiring to Europe over the next few years the Brexit transition period may be the best time to do it or to prepare for your future retirement. As most people are aware, under the Withdrawal Agreement anyone who has established their legal residence in an EU country before the end of the year will be able to remain with the same rights. What many do not notice is that provided you have moved before the end of the year you have until the end of June 2021 to submit their application for residence.

This event will provide a step by step guide to what you need to do to retire abroad: from choosing the target destination and looking at various property options, to funding the move and discussing practicalities. A specialist group of companies have been selected to cover the full process, including foreign exchange, wealth management, financial planning, legal, property purchase, home rentals, relocation, international mortgages and health care.

How A Lifetime Of Financial Rights In The EU Can Be Locked In Now

While the Brexit transition period offers some certainty for 2020, the clock is ticking for UK expats and those wishing to move to the EU to lock in protections for residence, healthcare and pensions. Jason Porter of Blevins Franks sets out what changed for British expats on 31st January, what the Withdrawal Agreements says about residency, healthcare and pensions and what will happen after the end of the transition period.

Non-Lucrative Visa: A Good Option For Those Retiring To Spain

Spain’s Non-Lucrative Residence Visa is an option for non-EU citizens who would like to retire in the country as well as those non-EU citizens who would like to live in the country but work remotely from Spain. It can also be an option for those who would like to spend a year in Spain without working before obtaining a work permit. As the name implies it is about non-EU citizens who have the financial means to support themselves in the country without working and any accompanying family.

It should also be an option for Brits looking to retire or live in Spain after the end of the Brexit transition period if more favourable terms are not negotiated.
