Expat Money Newsletter -
March 2019 Welcome to the
March Expat Money Newsletter.
This month we are focussing on high risk insurance. As business travel increases and the world continues to be a volatile place there are risks when travelling to remote and troubled areas. It is important to understand the risks, manage them and have the correct insurance cover.
The US tax filing deadline is on 15th April. As the deadline approaches we cover the basics for US expats who may not have filed as an expat before. The Expat Network Team expats@expatnetwork.com |

High Risk Insurance For An Increasingly Volatile World
Standard travel insurance does not generally cover you for high risk areas, such as warzones, crisis and disaster relief zones and specialist providers have developed to meet the need. Kidnap and ransom can happen anywhere, but there are higher risks in some areas, and policies to support you and pay the ransom, if the need arises can be vital.

Taxation Of US Expats: The Basics
The basic principle is that Americans living and working abroad are subject to the same tax rules as those who remain in the US. Americans are subject to US income tax on their worldwide income. There are the additional reporting requirements of FATCA and FBAR (see Five Things American Expats Need to Know About Foreign Bank Account Reporting). Tax returns are due to be filed at the same time (15th April), but when living abroad American expats get an automatic two-month extension to 15th June.

U.S. Taxes For Expatriates - Pitfalls And Traps
To ensure a smooth tax-filing process be well informed. Having residency in a foreign country without exploring tax ramifications could mean paying more than expected to the U.S. government or home state with possible penalties and interest.
Some important considerations include…
• Foreign earned income amount.
• Host country.
• State most recently lived in.
• Rental income and dividends/interest from assets in the U.S.
• Self-employment.
• Holdings in a foreign bank account.
